LONDON – Cable will overtake DTH as the top global DVR provider by the end of this year – recording 26.3 million homes against DTH’s 24.9 million – as digital cable grows quicker than other means of distribution, according to a report issued by Informa Telecoms & Media forecasts.
This is big news in Europe, whose digital TV leader has long been satellite service providers.
Called Global DVR Forecasts, the report says that North America will contribute three-quarters of the 2008 total, down from 81% in 2007, and that its share will continue to fall to 48% by 2013. The report offers market trends, evaluation and forecasts through 2013 for 46 countries, plus an analysis of the global market.
“DVR take-up works best where there is intense digital TV competition. Platforms will not want to be left behind if a competitor is attracting new subscribers through DVR promotions," said Simon Murray, author of the report.
