Sat phone provider gets aggressive, offering free phone

MISSISSAUGA – Aping their cellular competitors, satellite phone provider Globalstar Canada kicked of a free phone promotion this week.

The GSP-1600, the most popular Globalstar satellite handset, will be offered free of charge to customers on select airtime price plans. Customers can choose one of three annual price plans, to receive their free phone, a value of $849. There are also three monthly price plans where the phone is included at no extra charge beyond the monthly service fee.

Globalstar said in its press release it is the first satellite phone company in the country to launch such a promotion. Starting at $150 per month customers will receive 500 minutes of North American coverage per month and the use of a GSP 1600 at no additional charge. Annual plans start at $1,800 with 9,000 minutes and include the free phone.

"It is always challenging to grab the attention of businesses and individual users with marketing campaigns however we felt the introduction of a free phone promotion would help create the buzz to push sales to the next level," said Steven Bell, senior vice-president, international sales, marketing and customer operations. "Cellular companies have successfully used the free phone offer as a compelling marketing tool and have demonstrated it to be an effective approach to increase subscriber bases and maintain customer relationships."

With over 250,000 activated satellite voice and data units globally, Globalstar offers satellite services to commercial and recreational users in more than 120 countries around the world.

The company’s voice and data products include mobile and fixed satellite telephones, simplex and duplex satellite data modems and flexible service packages.
