Global Sunday examines the road to 9/11

TORONTO – A 90 minute special airing on Global Television this Sunday will look at the rise of anti-Western sentiment leading up to the 9/11 attacks.

“On October 7, 2001, with the world still reeling from the terrorist attacks at the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, Osama bin Laden recorded a video message celebrating the acts of mass destruction. Praising his followers as "the vanguards of Islam," he twice made reference to the historical roots of his rage, citing the "humiliation and disgrace" that the Middle East has suffered for "more than eighty years." In the West, most observers had absolutely no idea what bin Laden was referring to. His Muslim listeners, however, were not confused,” says the Global press release.

Global Sunday is on-location at ground zero in New York City this Sunday “for a unique examination of the circumstances that have created the current crisis between the West and the Middle East,” it adds.

This 90-minute special will begin with a one-hour documentary called The Road to 9/11, which chronicles a steady worsening of social, political, and economic conditions in the Middle East, the growing power of religious fanaticism and of anti-Western sentiment, and the increasing problem of terrorism.

The documentary will be followed by a panel discussion moderated by David Frum, former White House speech writer and co-author of An End to Evil – How to Win the War on Terror (and the reputed author of the “axis of evil” speech).

Frum will be joined by panel participants Irshad Manji, journalist and author of The Trouble with Islam, Jehad Aliweiwi, founding member of the Muslim Canadian Congress and National Post Managing Editor Jonathan Kay. The panelists will try to answer questions such as:
* Is there a quick fix to the growing power of religious fanaticism and the rise of extremism and violence?
* What is the proper role of the West in the newest world order and is the Middle East interested in this version of democracy?
* Will the West fail or prevail in the attempts to bring democracy to the Middle East?
