Xplore nearing completion of fibre project to connect over 33,000 premises in rural Quebec

MARKHAM, ON – Rural internet provider Xplore said Tuesday more than 95 per cent of construction is complete on a fibre network project — partly funded through the Canada-Quebec Opération Haute Vitesse (Operation High Speed) program — that is now offering high-speed internet access to more than 27,000 households and businesses across rural Quebec.

These homes and businesses are located in the regional county municipalities (MRCs) of Pontiac, Les Sources, Vallée de la Gatineau, La Tuque and Papineau.

The project is on track for completion in September, an Xplore press release says. When finished, Xplore’s fibre network will span 2,700 kilometres and enable more than 33,000 homes and businesses across rural Quebec to connect to internet speeds up to one gigabit, the release says.

“With each new connection, Xplore demonstrates its commitment to providing better broadband experiences to residents and businesses in the province,” Charles Beaudet, vice-president of government relations at Xplore, said in the release. “Supported by our partners in government, we are empowering Quebec residents to make the most of rural living.”

Xplore provided a progress update for each MRC in its press release.

In Pontiac, construction is 99 per cent complete on the network that will provide fibre connectivity to almost 8,000 homes in the region.

Construction is complete in Les Sources where more than 3,500 homes and businesses now have access to high-speed internet connectivity.

In Vallée de la Gatineau, more than 5,500 premises, or 70 per cent, are now able to connect to fibre internet.

Construction in La Tuque is 85 per cent finished and on track to connect more than 1,300 premises to gigabit-speed fibre internet by the end of September, according to the release.

In Papineau, more than 9,400 premises, or almost 70 per cent, can now connect to fibre internet from Xplore.
