MARKHAM – Xplore said Tuesday it has turned on its fibre-to-the-home network at 16,000 locations in Quebec, allowing for gigabit download speeds.
The network “milestone” was supported in part by the province’s Operation High Speed, which had connected the entirety of the province using various technologies to high-speed internet by the end of last year.
The company said that it is aiming to connect nearly 30,000 premises across Les Sources, Pontiac, Vallee de la Gatineau, Papineau and La Tuque by September.
“This is an important benchmark for Xplore as we continue to grow our network in Quebec and across Canada,” Fran Shammo, Xplore board chair and interim CEO, said in a press release. “Our team is dedicated to delivering fast and reliable internet access to more residents and more businesses to enhance rural living.”
The province said in its latest budget that it intends to get fibre to all homes as one of its next major goals.
