Wynonna Earp generates $23.6 million in economic growth

TORONTO and CALGARY — Production of season three of sci-fi western series Wynonna Earp added $23.6 million to local economies in Alberta and Ontario, according to an economic study commissioned by the Canadian Media Producers Association (CMPA).

Conducted by Calgary-based accounting and business consulting firm MNP LLP, the study was based on production expenditure data obtained from producer Seven24 Films for the third season of the series. (Season four premiered on CTV Sci-Fi Channel on Sunday, July 26.)

Filming of Wynonna Earp takes place mainly in and around Calgary, the communities of High River and Didsbury, and the Kananaskis area of Alberta, with post-production happening in Ontario.

According to MNP’s economic report, approximately $15.9 million of production spending on season three of Wynonna Earp occurred in Alberta, with about $8.3 million spent on wages, salaries and per diems, and $7.6 million spent on goods and services from suppliers. Of the production spending in Ontario and the rest of Canada, approximately $6.6 million was spent on wages, salaries and per diems, and about $1.1 million was spent on goods and services.

In total, 1,209 vendors from across Canada were engaged during production of season three of the series, including 1,057 vendors from Alberta, 123 from Ontario, and 29 from other provinces.
