World telecom conference held in Calgary

CALGARY – The world’s Asia-Pacific countries are meeting in Calgary this week to discuss key telecommunications issues.

The Telecommunications and Information Working Group of Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC TEL) is grappling with key files such as effective regulation, wireless security, spam, advanced technologies for remote communities and persons with disabilities, strengthening trade flows, support for the World Trade Organization’s negotiations, and ways to best make use of new technologies.

At least 350 delegates from among the 21 APEC nations, including Canada, the United States, Mexico, China, Japan, and Australia are attending. APEC TEL’s mandate is to improve the telecommunications and information infrastructure while aiding cooperation, free trade and investment, and sustainable development.

"This is our chance to showcase Canada’s expertise and technologies with some of our most important trading partners,” said Industry Minister Maxime Bernier.

There are workshops on wireless security, "e-inclusion" for people with disabilities, and broadband for remote and indigenous communities. Canada is also hosting a "technology playground," where companies can showcase their latest accomplishments.
