HALIFAX – Women in Film and Television Atlantic founder Jan Miller has received the Women of Excellence Award from the Canadian Progress Club Halifax Cornwallis.

Now in its 28th year, the Women of Excellence Awards honours seven inspirational women who play an important role in their community in the categories of Arts and Culture, Communications/Public Affairs, Education and Research, Entrepreneur/Innovator, Health Sport and Wellness, Management and the Professions and Young Woman of Distinction.  Miller was recognized in the Arts and Culture category for her dedication to the screen industry in Canada and abroad.

Miller (pictured) has more than 25 years’ experience working in the international industry as consultant, connector and trainer as director of Trans Atlantic Partners, one of the top international co-production training programs that brings Canadian, European and American producers together to explore co-venturing and co-production opportunities.  She was also instrumental in launching and serving as executive director for the National Screen Institute, designing its Features First and Drama Prize programs, and running its Local Heroes International Screen festival for thirteen years.

Eight years ago, Miller took on the founding chair position of WIFT-Atlantic and introduced its annual Women Making Waves conference. She continues her involvement as an active advisor and mentor, and the organization now has more than 200 members from the four Atlantic Provinces.

“Building a strong screen industry by providing access, skills and guidance, especially to our female professionals, is my passion,” said Miller, in a statement.  “It really is an honour to be celebrated for what you love to do! I am so grateful to the Canadian Progress Club for this award. I salute my fellow award winners as well as all the ‘excellent’ women in my life with whom I share this award.”
