White Pages shelved in seven major Canadian cities

MONTREAL – The residential phone listings that Canadians have relied on for more than 130 years have been dropped in Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, the Ottawa-Gatineau area and Quebec City.

After examining user habits, the Yellow Pages Group said that its consumers, particularly in urban areas, tend to use on-line and mobile resources such as YellowPages.ca and Canada411.ca to look up phone numbers. Residents in those cities can still receive a phone book if they specifically request one, and the Yellow Pages business directory will continue to be delivered annually.

The decision will decrease the number of phone books distributed by more than five million copies per year, and will save about 3,500 tonnes of paper annually, the company said in a statement.
