BANFF – White Light/Black Rain: The Destruction of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, a production from HBO Documentary Films and Farallon Films, picked up the Grand Prize and two other awards on Monday night at the 29th Banff World Television Awards.
The documentary was also given the NHK award for best Asian program, and the best history and biography program award.
The Real Superhumans and the Quest for the Future Fantastic, produced by Bird Plane Productions Inc. and Proper Television Inc., for the Discovery Channel got the nod as the best Canadian show. A second award for best Canadian program went to the China-USA-Canada co-production Ghosts of the Yangtze (Up the Yangtze), produced by EyeSteelFilms and the National Film Board of Canada.
Other Canadian winners, included How the Gimquat Found Her Song, produced by Trace Pictures/Oz Media, for best children’s program; Odd Job Jack, produced by Smiley Guy Studios, for best interactive program enhancements; NFB Filmmaker in Residence, from the National Film Board of Canada, for best Internet only program; and The Border: Interactive, by White Pine Pictures with Stitch Media, for best mobile program and enhancements.
Four Wings and a Prayer, produced by Primitive Entertainment Inc. in association with Filmes a Trois, the National Film Board of Canada and NHK, won the best wildlife and natural history program prize. The production is a Canada, France and Japan co-production.
Sex and the City’s Kim Cattral picked up the NBC Universal Award of Distinction and producer Jon Plowman accepted the Lifetime Achievement Award at the awards show.
