OAKVILLE, ON – The Weather Network and MétéoMédia are introducing TrafficEye Mobile to Canada in what is being billed as the first time a service with immediate weather and traffic information is being offered free to cell phone users.
Along with TrafficEye Mobile, the stations have launched another free application, which is called Weather Eye Mobile. They provide 24/7 mobile access to weather and traffic information.
WeatherEye Mobile (www.theweathernetwork.com/mobile/weathereye) provides access to current weather conditions, short- and long-term forecasts and current weather warnings for thousands of cities in Canada and around the world. It is being launched in English and French for BlackBerry smartpone users.
TrafficEye Mobile (www.theweathernetwork.com/mobile/trafficeye ) provides real-time access to traffic information, road incidents, traffic flow maps and traffic camera images. It will first be introduced to the Greater Toronto Area in English.
“With the WeatherEye Mobile and TrafficEye Mobile downloads, users will have even more local relevant information at their fingertips – not to mention that they’ll be able to consult them on their phones without a monthly charge,” said Mark Thompson, director of the mobile divisions for The Weather Network and MétéoMédia.
Data charges will depend on pricing and packaging from wireless carriers.
Advertising revenues generated within the applications make it possible for the company to offer the service to Canadians free of charge, the broadcaster said in a media release.
The Weather Network and MétéoMédia plan to offer over the next few months the mobile applications to other devices and cell phone providers, and to extend TrafficEye Mobile to other Canadian cities.
