OTTAWA – The federal government is helping to fund a new program spearheaded by Women in Communications and Technology (WCT) designed to help women advance into executive-level leadership positions in telecom, technology, cable and digital media.
Minister of Labour and Status of Women Dr. Kellie Leitch made the announcement Wednesday evening in Ottawa at the WCT Annual Award Gala, an event honouring the organization’s 14 Leadership Excellence Awards winners and its Woman of the Year, Bell Media president Mary Ann Turcke.
The project, selected through the Government of Canada's call for proposals entitled Increasing Economic Prosperity for Women, will receive $417,215 in funding. The 36-month initiative aims to increase the number of women in senior executive positions and on the boards of companies in the communications, media, and technical sectors across Canada. As part of the project, the organization will collaborate with corporations, universities and financial institutions to pilot and institutionalize a professional sponsorship program for women to expand their network and connect with corporate leaders, plus develop and deliver knowledge exchange activities such as an online forum providing access to expert support and mentoring.
“I'm thrilled that Status of Women Canada is coming on board as a partner to support WCT in this unique and important initiative”, said WCT executive director Joanne Stanley, in a statement. “We believe it will give many women the confidence and acknowledgement they deserve to move into the top leadership jobs not just in ICT, but everywhere.”
“Our Government's number one priority is creating jobs, growth, and long-term prosperity”, added Minister Leitch. “That's why we are pleased to invest in this project that will advance women in Canada's digital economy while helping our economy grow and prosper at the same time."
