No word yet on what will happen in Canada

LOS ANGELES – WarnerMedia this week unveiled HBO Max as the name of its new direct-to-consumer streaming service, which will be launched in the spring of 2020 and offer a wide array of new and library content.

Featuring the HBO brand, the new service will be “maximized”, says the press release, with an extensive collection of exclusive original programming (Max Originals) and the best-of-the-best from WarnerMedia’s enormous portfolio of beloved brands and libraries.

The exclusive streaming rights at launch to all 236 episodes of Friends is one of the headline titles announced. Right now Netflix owns the rights to that series and WarnerMedia will be taking it back. Will it take it back from Netflix in Canada, too and launch HBO Max here?

We asked and the company isn’t saying yet. A company spokesperson told Cartt.ca a launch event in the fall will provide more details.

HBO Max will also be the streaming home to The Fresh Prince of Bel Air, Pretty Little Liars and to a string of new Warner Bros.’ produced dramas for The CW, including the DC Entertainment series Batwoman, and Katy Keene, which is a spinoff of Riverdale.

When it launches, the company is expecting it to premiere with 10,000 hours of content.
