OTTAWA – The Canadian Association of Broadcasters is searching for a new head of the Canadian Broadcast Standards Council (CBSC) to replace Ron Cohen after he retires later this year.
The CAB, which is the sole voting member and major funder of the CBSC, said Tuesday that it will kick off a process to recruit a new national chair. The new chair will assume the role later this year and overlap with Cohen before he steps down from the post that he has held for 18 years.
Created by the CAB in 1990, the CBSC is an independent, non-governmental organization that administers the codified standards established by its members, Canada’s private broadcasters. The CBSC’s membership includes almost all (more than 730 in total) private sector radio and television stations, specialty and pay television and satellite radio services from across Canada, programming in English, French and third languages.
CAB chair Sylvie Courtemanche remarked that under Cohen’s leadership, the CBSC “has grown into an important part of the broadcasting architecture in Canada and is a recognized and respected self-regulatory model”.
