Walter Weckers retires

AURORA, Ont. – After eight years as executive vice-president of Aurora Cable Internet, Walter Weckers has retired, working his final day today.

“This is in keeping with my personal plans, and my retirement from ACI was anticipated within the company some two years ago,” he said in an e-mail to friends announcing his retirement.

“During these years I have been privileged to enjoy the confidence of Jim Irvine, and to have been involved in the transformation of ACI from a 330Mhz one-directional coaxial system to a modern 750Mhz bi-directional HFC network that operates a 9Mbps DOCSIS 2.0 Internet service, has fully digitized its television service, has launched a comprehensive high-definition and PVR service, and has taken the necessary steps to introduce an innovative VoIP service. As the ACI system grew in complexity, so matured the management and staff and I am pleased to have been part of the team that transformed ACI into a competitive, modern telecommunications system. Carry on, gang!” he said.

Weckers is also ending his long tenure as director of the Canadian Cable Systems Alliance. “My involvement in CCSA has been equally rewarding, especially during the challenging upheavals of industry consolidation, a few years ago. My thanks go to the CCSA team under the leadership of Alyson Townsend, for making it look easy,” he wrote.

“It is my intention to keep in contact with our industry, by contributing to initiatives that include WiFi Hotspots, network (modem) monitoring, VoIP, GSM and others, while pursuing other, personal objectives.”

His replacement was not announced.
