TORONTO — Independent TV service provider VMedia announced Wednesday its VMedia TV service can now be streamed on Apple TV, Apple iOS, Amazon Fire TV Stick and certified Android TV devices (including Nvidia Shield and Xiaomi). VMedia TV is already available on Roku devices.
The four new streaming TV apps being launched today were developed by VMedia and are based on the same architecture as the apps used to distribute the company’s recently launched RiverTV platform, according to George Burger, VMedia co-founder, in an email sent to Cartt.ca. However, the service available on the digital platforms named above is VMedia’s regulated BDU service – just delivered without a set top box – and is available only to customers who already have VMedia’s internet service.
By enabling access to VMedia TV without the need to buy or rent a set-top box (STB), Canadian households can save money while also benefiting from the features that come with most VMedia TV apps, says the news release. These features include: My TV, for quick access to favourite shows and on-demand content; Look Back TV, to watch previously aired content up to seven days back; Pause and Resume, which allows users to pick up where they left off; and Restart, which allows users to go back to the beginning of a show already in progress.
“The cost of STBs, whether to buy or rent, really adds up,” said Alexei Tchernobrivets, CEO of VMedia, in the news release. “Most homes have several boxes, so before you know it the costs can be greater than the TV packages themselves. Today, millions of Canadian homes already have devices which support the streaming TV apps VMedia now offers, and the numbers are growing everyday. Those STB costs are eliminated for them, and they get neat new TV features too.”
