TORONTO – Canada’s love affair with text messages could snowball over the holidays, potentially breaking last year’s record of an estimated 100 million text messages sent by Canadians on Christmas Day and New Year’s Eve, predicts Virgin Mobile Canada.
The company noted a significant increase in text messages being sent internationally by Canadians, particularly to China, England, Italy and Portugal. One of the main reasons for the growth in texting this year is the growing popularity of phones designed for text.
Some other facts from the press release are:
– On an average day, Canadians send about 54.1 million text messages. On Christmas Day and New Year’s Day, this figure will likely double;
– 1.6 billion text messages are sent on average each month;
– Canadians aged 18-30 will be the biggest texters this holiday season, sending an average of 4 text messages each.
