Virgin Mobile predicts text messages will outnumber snowflakes over the holidays

TORONTO – The sound of sleigh bells could be drowned out by the tapping of mobile phone keypads this holiday.  Virgin Mobile Canada said that it expects a record 200 million text messages to be sent on Christmas Day, and even more on New Year’s Eve.

The main reason for the growth in texting this year is the growing popularity of mobile phones designed for text-lovers, driven by the low cost of sending a text, the company said.

According to its data, Canadians send about 100 million text messages on an average day, but predicts this will double on December 25, and top 225 million on December 31st.

“Textaholics” aged 18-30 will be the biggest texters this holiday season, Virgin continued, sending an average of eight text messages each which is twice as much as last year.
