GATINEAU, Que. – Videotron has rolled out its wireless telephone service to Gatineau, Que. as part of its plan to extend the service to all parts of the province by the end of this year.
Residential and business customers in Gatineau are second behind Quebec City to have Videotron’s wireless service available to them.
The company says it’s “confident of positive market response” to its alternative service, since more than 150,000 of the potential 250,000 customers in the Gatineau Valley already subscribe to Videotron services.
“More and more people are realizing the many advantages of being a Videotron customer,” said Robert Dépatie, President and Chief Executive Officer of Videotron. “The introduction of wireless telephone service in Gatineau further enhances those advantages. Customers will no longer have to adjust their lifestyles to fit their wireless plan. They will be able to use their cell phones at any time of day or night, without having to worry about the time of day. That is what simplicity and user-friendliness are all about at Videotron.”
The company is bundling three products—wireless phones (with 300 anytime minutes per month), basic Internet service, and illico digital TV—for $79.95 per month for residences. Business customers can get the same package for $99.95 per month.
Videotron is also offering individual plans for 50, 300, 500, or 700 minutes of airtime a month, or time-sharing plans allowing customers to split 900 minutes among up to five people (friends, relatives, or employees).
Limited competition in Canada’s wireless market is one reason why we lag an estimated two and a half years behind the U.S. in penetration and technology, Videotron says. “Quebec is behind the U.S. market and even the Canadian market,” said Dépatie. “This means there is strong growth potential for a company with a sound, attractive value proposition. By offering affordable new services such as cable telephone and wireless, Videotron has become a driver of change in the marketplace and is spurring trends that benefit consumers across the country.”
