Videotron launches in Amos

AMOS, Que. — Following its acquisition of Cable Amos (Télédistribution Amos) in December 2019, Videotron announced Monday it has connected its first customer in the Abitibi-Témiscamingue region community of Amos, which is about 600 kms north of Montreal.

As of now, Amos residents can access Videotron residential cable telephone service via the Cable Amos network. According to the news release, Videotron’s first customer in the area is Sylvie Dufresne, the daughter of Télédistribution Amos founder Édouard Dufresne. “As we said in December, we are proud to pass the torch to Videotron because we are confident that it is the company best positioned to create healthy competition in the region,” she said in the news release. “It is only natural for us to be Videotron’s very first customers in Abitibi.”

This first wireline installation begins the rollout of Videotron’s service offerings in the region. For now, Videotron is offering Amos residents residential phone services. In the coming months, the full line of Videotron services will be made available, including Helix, its new IPTV home entertainment and connected lifestyle management platform, says the news release.

“For too long, Abitibians have suffered from the lack of competition — particularly in residential telephone service, where Bell was the only option,” said Jean-François Pruneau, president and CEO of Videotron, in the news release. “Healthy telecommunications competition in Abitibi begins now and the winners will be local residents and businesses.”

Videotron signed an agreement in December 2019 to acquire Cable Amos and its network. The acquisition is expected to close in the spring of 2020.

The Quebecor-owned company also plans to expand further in the region as a third-party internet access provider, having fought for access to Bell Canada’s Cablevision du Nord network.
