Verizon to add Skype to smart phones

BARCELONA, LUXEMBOURG and BASKING RIDGE, N.J. – Verizon Wireless and Skype have created a Skype mobile offering for 3G smart phones that will be made available to Verizon Wireless customers beginning in March.

The new Skype mobile product enhances Verizon Wireless’ smart phones for users who have data plans by offering a new way to call around the globe, while also giving hundreds of millions of Skype users around the world the opportunity to communicate with Verizon Wireless customers in the U.S.

"Skype mobile on Verizon Wireless changes the game”, said Verizon’s EVP and CMO John Stratton, in the announcement made at the 2010 Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. “For Verizon Wireless’ more than 90 million customers, Skype mobile adds great value because we’re effectively giving customers with smart phones and data plans the option to extend their unlimited calling community to hundreds of millions of Skype users around the globe. And you’re not limited to using a single type of phone; we’ll have nine smart phones ready right at launch in March."

Skype mobile will initially be available on select models of BlackBerrys and Motorola’s Droid smart phones.
