Uvagut TV to provide live Inuktitut coverage of federal leaders’ debate Thursday


IGLOOLIK, Nunavut — Inuit-owned TV channel Uvagut TV announced today it will provide live coverage of the Federal Leaders’ Debate in the Inuktitut language this Thursday, starting at 8:30 p.m. ET.

Lucy Tulugarjuk, managing director of Uvagut TV, will host special coverage of the debate and former Nunavut premier and speaker of the Legislative Assembly Paul Quassa (above) will provide pre-debate commentary and insight.

The debate will stream live with an Inuktitut voice-over and will be rebroadcasted on Saturday, Sept. 11 at 7 p.m. ET with additional post-debate comments from Tulugarjuk and Quassa, says a press release.

“Many Inuit will be listening closely for responses to the 15 priority issues identified by Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami for Election 2021 which include the Inuit Nunangat Policy; suicide prevention; food security; infrastructure and housing; Covid-19 relief and poverty reduction; climate change; tuberculosis elimination; Missing and murdered Inuit women and girls; and implantation of the Inuit Land Claims Agreements,” reads the press release.

Uvagut TV, Canada’s first 24/7 Inuktut television channel, launched in January 2021. It is available nationally to more than 600,000 Shaw Direct satellite subscribers, Arctic Coop Cable subscribers in Nunavut and Northwest Territories, and FCNQ subscribers in Nunavik.
