NUNAVUT – Uvagut TV, a 24/7 Inuktuk-language television channel, will be marking Nunavut Day tomorrow with live broadcasts of two celebratory events.
“Nunavut Day is extra special this year,” said Lucy Tulugarjuk, Managing Director of Uvagut TV in a press release.
“We’re broadcasting the festivities for the very first time so people all across Inuit Nanangat and throughout Canada can share in the celebration. That hasn’t been possible before.”
The first event, to be held from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. EST, will showcase celebrations in Igloolik and will feature “live music and elder Susan Avingaq who’ll be teaching traditional games,” the press release reads.
The second celebration, to be held from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m. EST, will feature talent from across Nunavut. It is being organized by Nunavut Tunngavik Inc, Alianait Arts Festival, Ayaya Communications and NCC, and will be hosted by NTI President Aluki Kotierk and playwright Miali Coley-Sudlovenick.
The event is being held online to comply with Covid protocols, and as such, artists including the Cambridge Bay drum dancing group Huqqullaaqtigiit and Arviat throat singer and jaw harp player Lois Suluk-Locke, will be performing on a virtual stage.
