UPDATED: Feds tap two at CRTC: Menzies named vice-chair telecom; Shoan Ontario commissioner

OTTAWA – The Federal government has filled two important positions at the CRTC, naming commissioner Peter Menzies as vice-chair telecom and Raj Shoan as Ontario regional commissioner.

While a formal announcement has not yet been made on either appointment by the government or the Commission, both men are shown to have been appointed to those roles on the “Apppointments” web page of the Governor-In-Council.

Menzies has been a full-time commissioner since was appointed as Regional Commissioner for Alberta and Northwest Territories in June of 2009 and his term was due to expire in June of 2014. He was originally hired as a part time commissioner in 2007.

Menzies has no telecom experience on his resume having spent most of his working career in the private sector in publishing. Prior to his CRTC appointment, he had been publisher, editor-in-chief and editorial page editor at the Calgary Herald and has worked and managed media operations in both the Alberta Legislative and Parliamentary press galleries, according to his official CRTC bio. Raj Shoan, according to his Linked In profile, has been director of regulatory affairs at the CBC since March of 2012 and prior to that held a similar position at Astral Media, where he worked from August 2008 to October 2011. Prior to that Shoan (pictured) worked at the CRTC for three-plus years.

The terms of both men expire in June of 2018.

Also, the Governor-In-Council has posted a job opening for the position of Quebec Regional Commissioner. Currently Suzanne Lamarre holds that position and she is not being renewed, Cartt.ca has confirmed. What that also means is that since Lamarre was on the panel of commissioners reviewing the Bell-Astral merger in May, that decision will definitely come out before she leaves. Her term expires June 29th.

There will be more to come on this story.
