ST. JOHN’S – Eastlink is pulling the plug on its analog TV service in a number of communities located in Newfoundland’s Northern Peninsula as well as some in Alberta and Ontario.
According to a report in The Telegram, the Halifax-based telco is moving its analog TV service out of Anchor Point, Conche, Jackson’s Arm, Raleigh and Hawke’s Bay starting later this month.
“Unfortunately, Eastlink is no longer able to provide service at a reasonable cost to a few communities on the Northern Peninsula that currently receive analog TV service only,” reads a company statement in the report. “These communities have been advised. There are other provider options available to these communities.”
A local businesses owner quoted in the report said that it will cost him “at least four times more” to receive TV service through Bell than it did with Eastlink.
When contacted by Cartt.ca, an Eastlink spokesperson confirmed that the company's analog TV service will be discontinued in "a small number of communities across our footprint where we can no longer provide this service at a reasonable price to the customer".
Those communities, which the spokesperson said represent less than 1% of Eastlink's customer base, are scattered across Newfoundland, Ontario and Alberta.
"It is a difficult business decision and we do appreciate that this has an impact on these customers", reads the emailed response. "We have worked to provide ample notice as they do have options with other service providers."
