Union says Bell cutting 52 jobs

TORONTO – One of Canada's largest unions is calling on the government to step in and help keep telecommunication jobs in Canada.

The Communications, Energy and Paperworkers Union of Canada (CEP) made the call Tuesday after receiving word that Bell Canada plans to consolidate some departments in its Ontario offices in Toronto, Scarborough and Ottawa, resulting in the layoff or job losses of 52 workers.

"We continue to see companies, such as Bell Canada, willing to move work anywhere including out of the country to protect their bottom line. It is time that the Canadian government take responsibility and act on behalf of workers and not corporations", said Barb Dolan, CEP administrative VP, Ontario region, in a statement.  “All levels of government need to do something about the leakage of Canadian jobs in the telecommunications sector and beyond, if governments acted we may just start seeing a turnaround in the Canadian economy."
