
The federal government announced Friday that $38 million is going toward connecting 14 rural and remote communities.
The investment, which is powering four projects, is expected to connect 3,611 households, 3,135 of which will be indigenous households.
Pimicikamak Communication Corp. is being given $14.5 million to connect 1,236 households (1,068 of which are indigenous) in the community of Cross Lake with fibre. The expected completion date is by December 2025.
NHCN Broadband is being given $12.3 million to connect 1,623 households (1,376 of which are indigenous) in Norway House Cree Nation, Fort Island, Jack River, Mission Island, and West Island with fibre and fixed wireless service. The expected completion date is by April 2026.
The Southeast Resource Development Council Corp. is awarded $8 million to connect 463 households (426 of which are indigenous) in Bloodvein and Berens River with fibre and fixed wireless service. The expected completion date is by December 2026.
And the Sapotaweyak Cree Nation is being awarded $3.1 million to connect 289 households (265 of which are indigenous) in Shoal River 65A and 65B, Pelican Rapids and Pelican Rapids Access Road Phase 1, and Sapotaweyak Cree Nation with fibre and fixed wireless service. The expected completion date is by December 2026.
