Twitter launches video streaming apps, but content won’t come with it here

SAN FRANCISCO – Twitter is offering new live streaming video apps for Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV, and Microsoft's Xbox One users as it continues its foray beyond microblogging.

The company said Wednesday that the free apps will feature all of its available live streaming video (such as NFL Thursday Night Football games and content from MLB Advanced Media and the NBA) plus curated content from Vines and Periscopes. Twitter's Apple TV app will offer side-by-side screens for live video as well as Tweeted video clips.

Anyone with these devices, regardless of whether they have a Twitter account or a pay TV subscription, can stream the content, reads the company’s news release.

(However, while the apps will be available here, the content which will be newly available on Twitter in other markets will remain in their traditional spots in Canada, as we reported. For example, any NHL content, Thursday Night NFL football and any Major League Baseball games featuring the Toronto Blue Jays will remain only on Rogers properties.)

"These devices will bring Twitter's live streaming video experience to life on the TV screen," said Twitter’s CFO Anthony Noto, in the release.  "Twitter has always been a great complement to TV, and now fans can enjoy even more premium video with live Tweets — and the best content on Twitter — right from their TVs. We're excited to introduce this new experience to people, without requiring a paywall or having to log in to Twitter."

Twitter for Apple TV is available globally via the App Store for Apple TV (4th generation), while Twitter on Xbox One will be available in Canada, Australia, Brazil, Mexico, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Twitter for Amazon Fire TV and Fire TV Stick are available in the U.S. and UK.
