TVO announces search for new CEO as Orridge prepares to depart in August

TVO Media Education Group (TVO) announced Tuesday it is searching for a new chief executive officer as current CEO Jeffrey Orridge, whose term was set to expire later this year, will be leaving TVO on August 15 for a new opportunity.

The Ontario public broadcaster’s chief operating officer, Jennifer Hinshelwood, will assume the role of acting CEO upon Orridge’s departure. TVO’s board of directors has selected executive search firm Odgers Berndtson to lead the search process for a permanent replacement, which includes identifying and recommending candidates for consideration by the Lieutenant Governor in Council. The appointment of TVO’s new permanent CEO will be made by Order in Council.

“During his time as CEO, Jeffrey has been instrumental in driving strategic, digital, and cultural transformation at TVO. His contributions have helped cement TVO’s reputation as an international leader in digital media education. My board colleagues and I extend sincere gratitude to Jeffrey for his leadership and dedication to public service,” Chris Day, TVO board chair, said in a TVO press release. “We are confident that under Jennifer’s leadership TVO will continue building on its recent momentum without missing a beat.”

“It has been an honour and a privilege to serve as TVO’s CEO during this time of growth and transition,” Orridge said in a statement. “The tremendous content the team has produced for audiences and educators, our work to amplify the issues and voices of all Ontarians, and our progress in transforming to a multi-platform digital organization are things that I will always remember with great satisfaction. But mostly, I will cherish the truly exceptional team I had the privilege and joy to work with.”

Orridge joined TVO as CEO in November 2020. Prior to that, he was chair of Canadian esports organization Tiidal Gaming Group, and was previously commissioner of the Canadian Football League from 2015-2017, and executive director of CBC Sports from 2011-2015. He also previously held senior leadership positions at Canadian Tire, Right to Play Canada, Mattel, Warner Bros. Entertainment, Reebok and USA Basketball. He is currently a board member of the Greater Toronto Airports Authority.

In a post on his LinkedIn profile Tuesday, Orridge said: “I want to extend my heartfelt gratitude to my colleagues across TVO, as it has been an honour to work alongside you. I am thankful to have worked with Jennifer Hinshelwood – a true partner in leading TVO – and I’m thrilled our Board Chair Chris Day has announced her as Acting CEO upon my departure. To the members of TVO’s Board, I thank you for your trust, collaboration, and guidance. Your commitment to public service and your passion for educational excellence have been a cornerstone of TVO’s success.

“While the organization has helped change the trajectory of people’s lives, TVO has changed my life as well. It has been a privilege to work in an organization that is intent on serving ALL Ontarians and, even as I transition to new professional opportunities, I remain deeply devoted to TVO’s mission.”
