MONTREAL — TVA Group’s TVA Sports channel announced today the extension of its broadcast rights agreement with the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA), making it the exclusive French-language broadcaster in Canada of the WTA’s international tournaments until the end of 2026.
“The network will broadcast all the WTA 500 and 1000 tournaments as well as the (WTA) 250 competitions featuring the country’s female players,” who include Quebecer Leylah Fernandez and Bianca Andreescu, notes an announcement on TVA Sports’ website (translated into English).
TVA Sports has presented the WTA’s professional women’s matches since 2013.
“We are very happy and proud to renew our long-term agreement,” said Louis-Philippe Neveu, general manager of TVA Sports, in a translated press release. “It is important for us to be able to continue to present the best female tennis players in the world and to be able to follow the emergence of our talents on the world stage, including Bianca Andreescu and Leylah Fernandez. This agreement enhances our offer for subscribers and we are convinced that these meetings with the best players in the world are essential to our programming.”
“TVA Sports has welcomed Franco-Canadian WTA supporters since 2013 and we are delighted to extend this partnership until 2026,” said Micky Lawler, president of the WTA. “The channel is committed to showcasing women’s tennis at a time when the sport is booming in Canada. It is with great enthusiasm that we will continue to collaborate with them in the coming seasons to promote our sport on their remarkable platform.”
The women’s section of the National Bank Open, a WTA 1000 tournament, is taking place this week until Sunday in Toronto. TVA Sports and Rogers Sports and Media’s Sportsnet are the exclusive Canadian broadcasters of the event, including the coinciding ATP Masters 1000 men’s tournament happening in Montreal this week.
