Testing and troubleshooting at the SCTE-Ontario fall meeting

MISSISSAUGA – The fall SCTE-Ontario Chapter meeting is set for this Thursday, October 12, 2006 in Mississauga.

The theme of the meeting will be: "Testing and Troubleshooting Advanced Cable Networks". Speakers with real-world experience will share their testing methodologies.

Tony Holmes from Trilithic will review VOIP and return spectrum testing and troubleshooting using various techniques to isolate problems in the field; discuss the power of addressing service level assurance, subscriber self test methods and Packet Cable specific test applications.

Dale Turner from Mountain Cable will demonstrate several Blackberry applications that were developed at Mountain Cable for monitoring, testing and troubleshooting the cable system.

Mike Palmer from Motorola will talk about "Troubleshooting Mixed-Protocol Digital Networks". Today, many systems comprise a mix and multitude of ingest and grooming devices. Receiver and Encoder sources, both ASI and IP, are Stat-Muxed, combined and transported over GigE multicast links. This entails a mixture of ASI and IP signals. These signals are then re-processed and launched as digital QAMs, and NTSC carriers. When problems arise, such as video impairments, tracking the sources back can be difficult.

Jason Lowe from ClearCable will provide a review of Pathtrack and DQM signatures of various return HFC impairments as well as using CMTS and modem MIBs to determine fault types (including some practical examples). Also highlighted will be the difficulty in accurately capturing transient faults such as impulse noise.

Register on the Ontario Chapter web site now to ensure a seat (and lunch!) at the meeting.

A limited number of vendor tables are still available. Contact Boris Eventov to reserve (Boris.Eventov@cogeco.com).
