OAKVILLE — The next test of Alert Ready, Canada’s public alerting system, is scheduled for Wednesday, November 25. Each participating province and territory will issue one test message to be distributed over television, radio and compatible wireless devices.
Pelmorex Corp., which operates Canada’s National Alert Aggregation and Dissemination System, part of Alert Ready, issued a press release today announcing the testing times of the public alerting system (please see below).
“Pelmorex operates the technical infrastructure of the Alert Ready system,” said Martin Belanger, director of public alerting at Pelmorex, in the press release. “Pelmorex receives alerts from authorized alert issuers who consist of provincial, territorial and federal authorities and makes those alerts available to alert distributors which include television, radio, satellite, cable and wireless service providers.”
Alert Ready is designed to deliver critical and potentially life-saving alerts to Canadians, including alerts regarding tornadoes, flooding, fires and Amber alerts. As of today, Alert Ready has enabled government authorities to deliver more than 170 emergency alerts since January 1, 2020.
Regular testing of Alert Ready provides an opportunity to validate and improve the performance and reliability of the system and to ensure it operates as intended in the event of an imminent life-threatening situation, says the release. Given the importance of the system, Canadians do not have the option to opt-out of this essential life-saving service.
