Telus to open new Internet data centre in Rimouski next year

RIMOUSKI – Telus is set to begin building a new $65 million intelligent Internet data centre in Rimouski that should be ready to open in 2012.

The company said Wednesday that the new facility, which will be built to LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design gold standards, will be a cornerstone in Telus’ strategic shift in support of next-generation cloud computing and unified communications solutions.

“The new Telus Intelligent Internet Data Centre will be a flagship facility; one of the most energy efficient and environmentally friendly purpose-built data centres of its kind in North America”, said François Côté, president of Telus Québec and Telus Health Solutions, in the announcement. “It demonstrates our commitment to providing our business clients with the most powerful, innovative IT services.”

The new facility will be directly connected to Telus’ national IP network and interconnect into existing data centres across the country. Telus said that it chose Rimouski for the city’s highly skilled and dynamic workforce, (Telus is the city’s largest private employer with more than 1,400 employees), as well as its proximity to hydroelectric power, an abundant source of green energy.  Rimouski’s moderate climate also contributes to lower energy requirements for the building’s cooling and heating systems, the announcement continued.
