Telus to invest $2B in Alberta over three years

EDMONTON – Telus has announced plans to spend $2 billion in Alberta over the next three years to further expand its wireless and wireline broadband networks.

In addition to hiring 750 people across the province this year, the investment will also help to extend its 4G LTE wireless network to seven new communities, connect 18 remote and geographically challenging communities to its broadband Internet, and further extend its Optik TV service to reach almost 70% of Alberta households by the end of this year.

"We will continue to expand wireline broadband access to rural and remote communities and deliver 4G LTE, the world's fastest wireless technology, to more than 80 per cent of Albertans by the end of this year”, said president and CEO Darren Entwistle, in a statement.  “We are building the communications technology and infrastructure that will help Alberta companies compete on the world stage, create local employment opportunities, and advance healthcare and education across the province for the benefit of citizens."

The capital investment is consistent with Telus' overall capital expenditure guidance for 2012.

In related news, Telus also pledged to provide $1.3 million over the next three years to carry out research with the University of Alberta on new consumer health technologies and services to support community-based, patient-centric healthcare in Alberta.
