Telus purchases ABC Communications

QUESNEL, B.C. – Telus has acquired independent broadband, wireless, telecom and TV provider ABC Communications, Cartt.ca has learned. The company is said to be the largest privately-held telecom provider in the province. The deal closed on May 1st.

Founded originally as an office telephone supplier 1989 in Quesnel, B.C., where its head office remains, in 1994 ABC was one of the first companies to offer Internet in the province. While not well known in the east, the company’s operations are province-wide.

Its wireless network includes over 200 transmitter sites across the province. ABC provides broadband service to customers in remote and rural areas using fixed wireless access using LTE technology built on ABC’s 3500 MHz and 3650 spectrum licences while its extensive fibre backbone links 32 cities to network centres in its offices in Prince George and Vancouver. The company also has offices in Burns Lake, Vanderhoof, 100 Mile House, Kelowna, and Penticton.

The company recently completed an upgrade to the Deka and Sulphourus Lake region where folks there can now access broadband speeds of 50 Mbps, according to this report.

According to a note to suppliers ABC (which stands for Allen Business Communications after its founder Bob Allen) sent out this week, the sale will not impact staff, all of whom will remain – and customers will likely not notice a difference as the company’s brand name will continue on.

Financial terms are unknown at this time.
