VANCOUVER – Telus today announced the re-naming of a building to honor its chairman Brian Canfield.
Currently the chair of the company’s board of directors, Canfield joined BC Tel as an apprentice installer in 1956 and progressed through the ranks before becoming president and COO in 1989. In 1990, he became president and CEO and in 1993 he was chairman and CEO.
Following his retirement in 1997, Canfield retained the position of chairman of BC Tel and following the merger with Alberta’s Telus, he became chairman of the newly formed Telus Corporation. Canfield also served as interim president and CEO of Telus in 1999 and held that position until current president and CEO Darren Entwistle joined the company in July of 2000.
The building, located at 3777 Kingsway in Burnaby is being named the Brian Canfield Centre for Excellence in Telecommunications.
“What we are achieving today has been made possible by leaders like Brian who have come before us. These people have built the legacy that they now bestow upon us," said Entwistle, Telus president and CEO, in a release. "To illustrate, Telus has grown from annual revenues of $37 million in the first year of Brian’s tenure with our company to almost eight billion dollars per year today. Significant business growth comes from taking considered risks and Brian epitomizes courageous leadership in making crucial decisions that continue to have profound impacts on TELUS’ advancement in our ever changing industry."
