
Shaw fastest fixed broadband provider during the quarter
SEATTLE — In its latest quarterly report, released today, Seattle-based mobile and broadband network testing company Ookla says Telus Communications was the fastest mobile operator in Canada in the third quarter of 2021, while Shaw Communications was the fastest fixed broadband provider in the country during Q3.
Using its Speedtest Intelligence data for Q3, Ookla awarded Telus a speed score of 81.93 for its mobile network performance. The next fastest mobile operator was Bell with a speed score of 77.15, according to Ookla’s report. The remaining top mobile providers included in the report were Fido, Rogers, Videotron and Freedom Mobile with speed scores of 64.87, 61.87, 54.85 and 40.46, respectively.
Videotron came out on top in terms of being the most consistent mobile operator in Canada, achieving a consistency score of 87.4%, according to Ookla. Fido had the second highest consistency score of 83.6%, followed by Freedom Mobile at 80.9%, Rogers at 79.9%, Telus at 78.3% and Bell at 76.5%.
When it comes to latency on Canada’s top mobile networks, Freedom Mobile had the lowest median latency at 19 milliseconds (ms). The other mobile providers had median latency speeds ranging from 25 ms for Fido, 27 ms for Telus, and 28 ms for Rogers, Bell and Videotron.
Looking at only 5G connections, Bell had the fastest 5G median download speed during Q3 at 183.39 megabits per second (Mbps), according to Ookla’s network tests. The next fastest 5G median download speeds were 176.38 Mbps for Telus, 115.5 Mbps for Rogers and 93.12 Mbps for Videotron.
In terms of 5G availability during Q3, Rogers had the best 5G availability of 35.9%, followed by Telus at 31.6% and Bell at 26.6%, according to Ookla.
Fixed Broadband
Among the top fixed broadband providers in Canada, Shaw was the fastest in Q3 with a speed score of 184.26, according to Ookla’s ranking. Rogers was not too far behind with a speed score of 179.67. Third fastest was Bell with a score of 129.39, followed by Cogeco, Telus and Videotron with speed scores of 121.78, 119.59 and 111.18, respectively.
In terms of consistency, Rogers was the top fixed broadband provider with a consistency score of 89%. Shaw ranked second with a consistency score of 86.7%. The remaining top providers were Cogeco at 84.7%, Videotron at 84.6%, Telus at 79.4% and Bell at 78.8%.
Bell and Telus had the lowest median latency among top fixed broadband providers in Q3 at 6 ms, according to Ookla’s measurements. Rogers and Shaw had median latency speeds of 12 ms, while Videotron’s and Cogeco’s were 14 ms.
Regional and City Speeds
Newfoundland and Labrador showed the fastest median mobile download speed in Canada during Q3 at 68.24 Mbps, according to Ookla’s tests. Saskatchewan had the slowest median mobile download speed (24.78 Mbps) during the same period.
Newfoundland and Labrador also achieved the fastest median download speed over fixed broadband at 124.22 Mbps while Yukon Territory had the slowest (36.53 Mbps) during Q3.
Looking at major cities, Halifax had the fastest median mobile download speed during Q3 at 113.1 Mbps and Calgary showed the fastest median download speed over fixed broadband at 134.33 Mbps.
