BC – Telus has invested $15.3 million in expanding it 4G LTE wireless network into 27 communities throughout BC and another $1.35 million in Alberta, it announced today.
Telus says it’s now offering the “world’s fastest wireless technology” to the BC communities of Chilliwack, Abbotsford, Aldergrove, Haney, Mission, Agassiz, Harrison Hot Springs and Hope; Victoria, Saanich, Oak Bay, Esquimalt, Langford, View Royal; Surrey, Richmond, North Delta, White Rock, Langley, Maple Ridge, Pitt Meadows; Kelowna, Penticton, West Kelowna, Lake Country, Peachland and Summerland. In Alberta its added LTE service to Drayton Valley and Strathmore.
Additional communities will be getting access to its 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) network in the coming months says Telus, and by the end of 2012 its network will reach more than 80% of Alberta’s population and nearly 90% of BC’s.
Telus claims that downloading a 600 megabyte album of songs with a 4G LTE-capable device will take just 3.5 to 7 minutes and a 1.2GB HD movie from iTunes will take between 7 and 14 minutes. It also notes that customers traveling outside of its 4G LTE network coverage areas can move from 4G LTE to the existing 4G HSPA network with no disruption of service. It says that current rate plans will apply to all Telus 4G LTE customers without premium charges.
The launch of its 4G LTE network complements its Optik on the go service say Telus by allowing Optik TV customers to view a selection of TV On Demand shows and movies on their mobile devices, tablets and laptops anywhere they go. The service offers TV On Demand shows and movies from 11 channels including Super Channel, Hollywood Suite, YTV, ABC Spark, Family Channel and Disney Jr. Telus plans to grow the library throughout 2012 and beyond as new shows and movies are added.
