NICE, France – Telus chief technology officer Ibrahim Gedeon this week noted his concern about two major issues confronting the telecom business – the high costs of virtualization, and the slow release of spectrum needed for 5G development by the Canadian government.
According to a report in Light Reading, Gedeon, while appearing at Digital World Transformation 2018 in Nice, noted a crippling spike in costs coming for network functions virtualization (NFV) thanks to expectations that were too high as well as huge software maintenance costs. He also took a swipe at the Canadian government during his appearance at the event, decrying the slow speed at which spectrum looks to be released. In a report on Mobile World Live, it quotes Gedeon saying Canada may well fall behind the rest of the world if the federal government doesn’t quicken the pace at which it is releasing spectrum to wireless providers, especially 3.5 GHz.
