CHILLIWACK, B.C. – Telus will invest $55 million to connect more than 90% of homes and businesses in Chilliwack directly to its fibre optic network.

Direct fibre connection will dramatically boost data capacity, providing local homes access to its gigabit-enabled PureFibre network that boasts Internet speeds of up to 150 megabits per second, the company said late Thursday.  This new fibre optic infrastructure will also be the backbone of Telus’ wireless network, enabling even more wireless capacity and speed.

“Direct fibre connection unleashes infinite possibilities now and into the future,” said Telus’ EVP and broadband networks president Tony Geheran, in the news release.  “Chilliwack is a growing city, and this generational investment will dramatically improve Internet speed and capacity for residents and businesses large and small, as well as health care facilities and schools. Once the build is complete, families and businesses right here in Chilliwack will have the same or even better Internet access than their neighbours in larger urban cities in the Lower Mainland.”

Construction work is expected to begin in the coming weeks, and all homes and businesses are expected to be connected before the end of 2018.

Telus said that the investment is part of its commitment to invest $4.5 billion throughout B.C. between 2016 and 2019.
