HAVRE-SAINT-PIERRE and RIMOUSKI – Telus today announced $8 million and $20 million private investments in the North Shore and Lower St. Lawrence regions of Quebec respectively.
The $8 million investment in the North Shore region will bring Telus’ PureFibre and 5G networks to the Innu community of Ekuanitshit as well as the municipalities of Longue-Pointe-de-Mingan and Port-Menier, a press release says.
“This investment is paired with nearly $3 million from the Canadian and Quebec governments as part of the Operation High Speed program (Éclair I component), and will bridge the digital divide by fostering digital innovation in local businesses, stopping rural depopulation of young people, promoting Innu culture and the tourism industry, and accelerating the development of virtual services in health and education,” the release explains.
The combined nearly $11 million will be used for three projects:
- Bringing Telus’ PureFibre network to 600 homes and businesses in the Innu community of Ekuanitshit and the municipality of Longue-Pointe-de-Mingan
- Constructing new wireless sites in Ekuanitshit and Port-Menier to expande 5G coverage
- Ongoing support for vulnerable families and local organizations
Telus’ $20 million investment in Quebec’s Lower St. Lawrence region will be used to expand 5G coverage and to rollout the company’s PureFibre network, a separate press release says.
“This investment is paired with $1.8 million from the Canadian and Quebec governments as part of the Operation High Speed program (Éclair I component),” according to the release.
The combined $21.8 million will benefit three projects:
- Bringing Telus’ PureFibre network to 400 homes and businesses in the communities of Saint-Mathieu-Rioux and Lac-des-Aigles and in the Lac Taché sector of Rimouski’s ZEC
- Constructing new wireless sites in Saint-Damase to expand 5G coverage
- Ongoing support for vulnerable families and local organizations
Both press releases also indicate Telus is “on track to complete its network deployments related to the Operation High-Speed program by September 2022.”
