Telesat to bring LEO connectivity to India

OTTAWA and MUMBAI — Global satellite operator Telesat announced today it has partnered with Indian satellite communication service provider Nelco to provide internet connectivity through Telesat’s low earth orbit (LEO) network in India.

Nelco, a part of Tata Group, provides enterprise connectivity solutions across the country. As part of the agreement, the two companies will collaborate on terrestrial facilities, commercial distribution and regulatory frameworks to offer Telesat LEO satellite connectivity in India.

Telesat LEO’s open architecture will simplify the integration of its services with enterprise networks, including Nelco infrastructure and service offerings, says the press release announcing the two companies’ collaboration. The Telesat LEO constellation, which is not yet deployed, will provide complete coverage of India, in addition to potential benefits in areas such as 4G/5G backhaul, mobile hotspots, distance education, telemedicine, village connectivity, and maritime and inflight connectivity, says the release.

“Considering the huge potential for Satcom services growth in the country in the coming years, we are continuously exploring the latest satellite technologies to bring better value to our customers and expand the market. We believe that our partnership with Telesat will help in bringing LEO satellites into the country, which has the potential to revolutionise connectivity in the future,” said P.J. Nath, managing director and CEO of Nelco, in the press release.
