Ottawa-based satellite operator Telesat announced Tuesday it is now accepting applications for its fifth annual National Women in Technology and Engineering scholarship program and its third annual National Fellowship for Indigenous Youth program.
Through the Women in Technology and Engineering scholarship, Telesat will award $10,000 scholarships to eight female full-time undergraduate students pursuing studies in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). Their STEM program must be aligned with Telesat’s operations, according to the eligibility criteria listed on Telesat’s website.
Under the Fellowship for Indigenous Youth program, Telesat will provide $5,000 scholarships and $15,000 stipends to two indigenous students to help them pursue their studies and advance their careers in STEM fields (again applicable to Telesat’s operations), and gain hands-on working experience through up to eight-month paid internship placements at one of Telesat’s facilities in Alberta, Manitoba, Nunavut, Ontario or Quebec.
Applications for both scholarship programs are being accepted until 1 p.m. ET on March 25.
Scholarship Partners Canada, a division of Universities Canada, administers the scholarship programs on Telesat’s behalf.
“Telesat is proud to provide programs that address the gender and cultural gaps in STEM, by creating opportunities for women and Indigenous students to advance their education, access career opportunities and develop vital technical skills in technology and engineering,” France Teasdale, Telesat’s vice president of people, said in a Telesat press release. “These programs aim to celebrate individuals from diverse backgrounds as we recognize that gender and cultural diversity are crucial to driving innovation and collaboration, which will help further advance Telesat’s and Canada’s position in the space and satellite industry.”
