Telesat boosts revenue

OTTAWA – Bell Canada Enterprises’ satellite operator Telesat Canada said the first quarter of 2005 showed a 28% increase in revenue to $107.7 million.

Of the total revenue, $51.1 million of which comes from the broadcast side of the business, which is a 6.6% increase over the first quarter of last year.

The company, which owns and operates satellites serving the Americas and provides a wide range of consulting services, “continued its long track record of profitability with the net earnings of $19.5 million, an increase of 2% from the first quarter of 2004,” said the press release.

Total earnings from the broadcast side was $32.8 million, an increase of 49.7%. This quarter Telesat began segmenting its financial reporting among its service units and defines its broadcast market as “distribution or collection of video and audio signals in the domestic and North American markets which include television transmit and receive services, occasional use, bundled digital video compression and radio services.

Cash flows from operating activities were $39 million compared with $51.6 million in 2004, a decrease of $12.6 million from the first quarter of 2004. The decrease was largely due to a one-time payment of income taxes in March 2005 of $12.2 million.

Telesat earns 66% of its total revenue in Canada and 30% in the States, with the remaining four percent elsewhere.

Other company highlights for the first quarter of 2005 included:
