OTTAWA – Satellite service operator Telesat launched its Telstar 11N satellite from the Baikobur space centre in the Republic of Kazakhstan early on Friday.
The satellite will be located at 37.5 degrees west, and use 39 high powered Ku-band transponders to support video and data applications in North America, Europe, Africa and across the Atlantic Ocean. It is the first satellite to provide Ku-band coverage of the Atlantic Ocean from the Arctic Circle to the equator, Telesat’s statement said.
"Telstar 11N marks a significant expansion in Telesat’s international fleet and will contribute to our anticipated growth in 2009 and for years to come," said president and CEO Dan Goldberg, in the announcement. "This powerful new satellite will bring additional Ku-band capacity to underserved markets, such as Africa and the Atlantic Ocean region, and allows us to complement the coverage of Telesat’s highly utilized Telstar 12 satellite at 15 degrees West."
