TORONTO — Telefilm Canada announced today the launch of a new six-episode podcast series, Maple Popcorn, which offers exclusive interviews with Canadian TV and film icons to provide a sneak peek on what goes on behind the scenes and explore the cultural contributions made by the Canadian film industry, says Telefilm’s press release.
Produced by The Brand is Female and powered by Telefilm Canada, Maple Popcorn is available on Apple Podcasts, Spotify and other major podcast platforms. The weekly series is hosted by Canadian entertainment reporter Marriska Fernandes.
“The Canadian film industry is experiencing remarkable levels of production compared to pre-pandemic rates, and creating the Maple Popcorn podcast was a natural move to pay homage to our talented and resilient actors, directors, screenwriters and producers who continue to make Hollywood North what it is,” said Eva Hartling, president and founder of The Brand is Female, in the press release. “We’re honoured to help shine a spotlight on Canadian creators of all backgrounds; from Indigenous voices, women filmmakers and rising talent to established actors who have appeared in some of our favourite on-screen content.”
“Popularity in podcasts has grown tremendously over the years given that listeners can multitask while staying engaged in behind-the-scenes celebrity conversations in the comforts of their homes or on-the-go,” says Christa Dickenson, executive director and CEO of Telefilm Canada. “We are proud to partner with The Brand is Female’s Maple Popcorn podcast series which further elevates our support of Canadian storytellers while providing a deeper connection for audiences to our incredible talent.”
Among Maple Popcorn guests are: Kim Coates, Canadian actor best known for his television role in the FX series Sons of Anarchy (2008-2014) and for his film roles in Goon (2011) and Cold Brook (2018); Mary Galloway, emerging Canadian talent, known for her role in the TV series Supernatural (2005-2020); award-winning Canadian director Thyrone Tommy, best known for his work on Mariner (2016) and Avalanche (2014); and Clement Virgo, Canadian film writer and co-founder of the Black Screen Office, an organization created to support Black Canadians throughout the screen industries.
