Telefilm Canada last week announced the publication of its Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Accessibility (EDIA) Report 2024-25, which presents the results of the self-identification data collection carried out during the last fiscal year for Telefilm’s development and production programs.
The report provides a more detailed view of the key results published in Telefilm’s 2024-25 Annual Report and includes results from fiscal years 2022-23 and 2023-24, providing a three-year overview of progress. It also offers a comparison between applications and funding, as well as breakdowns by language and by program or stream.
In terms of Telefilm’s production programs, the report notes increased representation between the application stage and the funding stage for women directors, directors of diverse genders, 2SLGBTQIA+ creators, Indigenous creators, and members of Official-Language Minority Communities (OLMCs).
Among the report’s production portfolio highlights, there was strengthened representation in the role of producer for Black women and women of colour, both in the number of projects and in funding volume, rising respectively to nine per cent from five per cent, and to five per cent from three per cent.
There was also growth in representation for Indigenous producers, reaching nine per cent of funded projects compared to seven per cent the previous year, and more significantly, 11 per cent of total funding compared to five per cent previously, according to the report.
In addition, the report notes improvement in representation of 2SLGBTQIA+ producers, reaching 21 per cent of total funding compared to 15 per cent the previous year.
Looking at the progress in representation of screenwriters from OLMCs, the share of Francophone funding awarded to projects written by Francophones in minority situations rose to eight per cent from five per cent, while the proportion of Anglophone funding awarded to projects written by Anglophones in minority situations increased to 19 per cent from 12 per cent.
