Telefilm Canada on Tuesday announced an investment of $1.61 million in five projects as part of the second round of its Production Program’s Minority Coproduction stream.
The selected coproductions, having a Canadian share of 30 per cent or less, include three films for the English-language market and two films for the French-language market, including one project that previously received greenlight support.
Dark Ocean is a Canada-Iceland coproduction directed by Baldvin Zophoníasson and written by Matthías Tryggvi Haraldsson. The Canadian production company receiving Telefilm funding for this English-language project is British Columbia-based Terminal City Pictures Ltd. The film distributor is Elevation Pictures.
Saskatchewan-based Prowler Pictures Inc. is to receive production funding for El Maestro, a Canada-Mexico coproduction, directed by Diego Luna and written by Luna and Diego Rabasa. Film Option International is the distributor for this Spanish-language film aimed at the English market.
The third film for the English market is Turpentine, a Canada-Spain coproduction, featuring the Catalan, French and Spanish languages. Ontario-based Hawkeye Pictures Inc. is receiving production funding for this film directed and written by Anna Bofarull.
For the French-language market, Sur La Ligne is a Canada-France coproduction directed by Yves Piat and written by Piat and Alaa Eddine Aljem. Quebec-based production company 12PM Inc. is to receive funding for this French and Arabic film, which will be distributed by Studios H264.
A previous greenlight initiative selection, Les agents des étoiles is a French-language coproduction between Canada and Luxembourg. Quebec-based Productions des Années Lumières Inc. is receiving production funding for this film from director Sarah Sutter and screenwriter Cyril Bossmann. Les Films Opale is the distributor.
Telefilm said in a press release a total of 14 applications were assessed in this funding round, representing more than $5 million in funding requests.
