Telefilm Canada invests $4.8M in five big-budget projects in the English market

Telefilm Canada announced Tuesday it has committed $4.8 million to fund five projects from the English market under its Production Program, part of its second round of decisions in the big budget stream including international coproductions.

In May, Telefilm announced its first round of decisions under the same stream, totalling $26.4 million in funding commitments to 13 big-budget projects in the English market.

The five big-budget feature films selected in the second round include the animated fantasy Fairyheart, a coproduction between Canada, Hungary and Germany, being produced in Ontario by Storyteller Pictures Inc. and to be distributed by Vortex Media. The film is directed by Anita Doron, and written by Doron and Attila Gigor.

Produced by Northern Gateway Films Inc. in Alberta, Legends of Conquest is a family/adventure film directed by Dylan Pearce and written by Pearce and Marcus Rosner. Elevation Pictures is the distributor.

A coproduction between Canada and Belgium, Telephone is a science fiction film directed by Anthony Scott Burns and written by Burns, Jack Stanley, and brothers Àlex and David Pastor. The film is being produced in Ontario by JoBro Productions Inc. and will be distributed by Elevation Pictures.

The psychological drama The Eden Express is a Canada-Scotland coproduction directed by Daniel Cockburn and written by Cockburn and James Schultz. Produced by Scythia Films Inc. in Ontario, the film is being distributed by Mongrel Media.

The First Dinosaur is a family/adventure film from director J.J. Johnson, written by Johnson, Joan Digba and Christin Simms. The film is being produced in Ontario and distributed by Sinking Ship Entertainment Inc.

Telefilm says in a press release it received a high volume of applications under the Production Program this year. From the second intake, 20 projects were assessed from the English market, representing more than $33.1 million in funding requests, Telefilm says.
