Telecom Hall of Fame reveals inaugural winner of international career service award


OTTAWA – Dr. Bruce Gracie is the inaugural winner of the new International Telecom Career Service Award, Canada’s Telecommunications Hall of Fame and its sponsor Neotelis announced Tuesday.

The award, created this year, is designed to honour an individual who demonstrates exemplary work and dedication in promoting Canadian telecommunications around the world.  Dr. Gracie will receive his award during the 2010 Telecom Laureate Awards gala dinner and induction ceremony scheduled for November 10 at the Westin Hotel in Ottawa.

“We are delighted to recognize the tremendous role that Dr. Gracie has played in advancing telecommunications both in Canada and internationally”, said Lorne Abugov, founder and director of Canada’s Telecommunications Hall of Fame, in the announcement.  “He is a well-recognized and highly credible spokesperson for Canada within the upper echelons of the International Telecommunications Union, where global spectrum policy is made.  Canada owes much to the diplomacy and negotiations skills that Dr. Gracie has brought to the multilateral table at the ITU and to other international telecommunications fora during his splendid career.”

Dr. Gracie is currently Special Advisor, International Organizations in the telecommunications policy branch of Industry Canada.  He served as chairman of the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) Council in 2006, and as chairman of the ITU Radiocommunication Assembly in 2007.  He currently works as ITU Councillor for Canada, chairman of the Commonwealth ITU Group, chairman of the Council Group on the Financial Regulations, and chairman of the Council Tripartite Group on Human Resources Management.
